RULES – SCORING –  SCHEDULE

Rise to the Challenge – HCMC Indoor Climbing Championship 2025

This championship is judged under official IFSC regulations, bringing athletes the same standards used in international competitions. Participants should be prepared for a fair, transparent, and world-class format that combines both Bouldering and Lead Climbing results to determine overall rankings.

*Athletes aged 18+ are eligible to register for participation.
RULES:

Anyone can participate if they meet the following criteria:

  • Vietnamese nationality
  • Age 18+
  • Passed the Lead Climbing Test

Competition Standards
The Championship will be judged under IFSC climbing regulations to ensure fairness and international-level standards.

From Local to International
Winners of the HCMC Championship will have the opportunity to represent Vietnam in the international arena. In 2024, our champions earned their place at the SEA Games Climbing in Thailand (December 2025).

Athletes will compete in two categories — Bouldering and Lead Climbing — under official IFSC rules. Final rankings will be based on the combined score from both disciplines.

Competition Format:

  • Qualification Round: 3 boulder problems + 2 lead routes

  • Final Round: 3 boulder problems + 1 lead route

Scores from both Bouldering and Lead Climbing are combined to determine each athlete’s total score and final ranking.

Join us in shaping the future of climbing in Vietnam and taking another step toward representing the nation on the global stage.

Do you have what it takes to climb for Vietnam?

This championship is more than just a competition—it’s your chance to prove your skill, resilience, and passion for climbing. Those who rise to the top won’t just earn a medal; they’ll earn the opportunity to join the national team, carry the Vietnamese flag, and inspire the next generation of climbers.

Register now and take the first step toward becoming part of Vietnam’s climbing legacy.

SCORING:

Observation Procedure

A) Qualification Rounds
Each qualification route will be demonstrated by forerunners:

  • A video recording will be continuously played in the Warm-Up Area, starting no later than 60 minutes before the scheduled start of the round.

B) Final Rounds
Final rounds will be preceded by a six (6) minute collective observation period for competitors.

  1. During this time, competitors may:

    • Touch only the first holds on the route without leaving the ground.

    • Use binoculars to observe the route.

    • Make hand-drawn sketches or notes (use of recording devices is not allowed).

  2. After the observation period, competitors must return to the Isolation Zone or Transit Zone as directed by judges.

Climbing Procedure

  • Each attempt includes:

    • A Preparation Period of 40 seconds (after entering the field of play).

    • A Climbing Period of six (6) minutes.

  • Each competitor may make one attempt per route, except in cases of Appeals or Technical Incidents, where supplementary attempts may be permitted.

The lead route is set on a 15-meter-high wall. Each athlete has one attempt to climb as high as possible within six (6) minutes.

Athletes must clip their rope into the quickdraws installed along the route for safety. If they fail to clip into a quickdraw, any points gained afterward are voided.

  • Reaching the highest hold = 100 points.

  • Rankings are based on the highest hold number reached.

  • A “+” is added if the athlete shows clear movement toward the next hold.

Competitors are kept in an isolation room before their on-sight attempt (except during Qualification). Separate routes are set for men and women.

General Rules

  • Before each round, route setters design unique boulder problems for men and women.

  • Routes are changed between the qualification and final rounds.

  • Athletes do not use safety ropes, but the floor beneath the wall is protected with thick mats.

  • All routes remain secret until the competition begins.

Climbing Procedure

  • Each boulder has a designated start position, requiring both hands and both feet placed on the marked holds.

  • The highest hold is the “top.” A top is awarded when the athlete controls the top hold with both hands in balance until the judge signals success.

  • Athletes may make multiple attempts within the time limit.

  • Two “zone holds” (low zone and high zone) are placed between the start and the top. Zones provide partial points if the boulder is not topped.

Scoring

  • Athletes are ranked based on:

    1. The number of boulders topped.

    2. The number of zones reached.

    3. The total number of attempts.

  • A maximum of 75 points can be earned in each round:

    • 25 points for each boulder topped (up to 75 points for 3 tops).

    • For boulders not topped:

      • 10 points for reaching the high zone.

      • 5 points for reaching the low zone.

    • 0.1 points deducted for each failed attempt, but only if the athlete later reaches a zone or the top.
